The Netherlands and DelftThe Netherlands is a relatively small country situated in north west Europe, close to Germany and the United Kingdom. With a population of approximately 16 million people, it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Delft is an interesting and historic town located in the province of South Holland between the larger cities of The Hague, seat of the Dutch government, and Rotterdam, the biggest seaport in the world. Delft is nicknamed 'de Prinsenstad' (the Princes' City), because William of Orange, the founding father of the Dutch royal family, held court in Delft in the 16th century. Other famous historical figures, who lived and worked in Delft are the painter Johannes Vermeer and the inventor of the microscope, Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek. Delft's rich history is still very much alive when one looks at the ancient canals lined with merchant houses, the old churches, and the beautiful town hall. But Delft is also a very modern and lively city. Ten percent of its 100,000 inhabitants are students and the presence of the university has attracted a large number of technology-oriented companies to set up businesses in Delft. Delft University of Technology
TU Delft, in the spirit of Prometheus, is an entrepreneurial university at the forefront of technological developments; advancing the state of technology further on behalf of society. Through fundamental and applied research and educational programmes, TU Delft prepares the engineers of tomorrow. Established on 8th January 1842 by King Willem II, TU Delft has a rich tradition of more than 160 years. Initially, the university mainly focussed on civil engineering but over the years more and more engineering disciplines were added to the academic programme. Today, TU Delft has eight faculties collectively offering seventeen BSc and more than twenty MSc programmes. With approximately 13,000 students and 2,100 scientists (including 200 professors) TU Delft is the largest and most comprehensive university of engineering sciences in the Netherlands. Excellent quality in research and education TU Delft is a state university which conducts cutting edge research and provides first class education. In addition to national accreditation, many of TU Delft's educational programmes have also been acknowledged by international organisations such as the American Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET). TU Delfts research portfolio is clustered around thirteen interdisciplinary technological themes examples of which are Computational Science and Engineering, Mechatronics and Microsystems, Nanotechnology, Sustainable Industrial Processes and Water: Water Works, Water Management and Water Quality. Research is conducted within the faculties, research institutes and research schools. Each year, the University's cumulative research results in an average of 185 PhD dissertations, and over 4,000 publications in scientific journals. Research and education are interrelated. This is most notable in the MSc programmes which are research driven. Both the technology capabilities and the organisation of manufacturing processes are often boundary conditions for product development. On the other hand, development in production technology and innovations in the organisation of production means are enablers for new products and services. Knowledge on advanced production techniques is essential for the creation of advanced products with high added value especially taking into account the individualisation of markets with small batch sizes based on customer demands.
